After more than 10 years in public relations work, Ted Smits decided
to switch roles-and the gamble paid off. His firm, TED-TV Productions, is now a leading producer of videos for new business presentations by PR firms, as well as media highlights reels used by PR agencies and their clients. "My agency experience has played a big role in my success. I can easily stand in my client's shoes and understand their needs," Smits says. Admitting to a "near-obsessive commitment" to his craft, he says that "creativity, long nights and the latest digital-video technologies" are the keys to turning out high-quality productions. "I never hesitate to create a different shot, use a new graphic effect, or re-shuffle the edit sequence if it will make the video more entertaining or informative." TED-TV has thrived on word-of-mouth referrals alone. "We've never advertised or marketed our firm," he says.
